Cops..we love them and hate them in equal measure. But cops are necessary in society because they play a big role in maintaining law and order in our country. I’ve had quite a number of interactions with them, both good and bad.
The bad instances is when they ask me to bribe them so that they can let me go because of a traffic offences that I have committed. The good instances is when they forgive me for the wrongs I’ve committed.
The last traffic offence I committed was jumping the traffic lights after they had turned red. Its like cops know that particular junction is notorious for people committing offences like mine so they were just lying waiting for me.
What saved me was that I had all my kids with me (4 of them), the last two being 4 years old (twins). They threatened to take me to the police station but the innocent looks of my kids saved me and he let me go.
Salaries of Cops
I was curious to find out how much police officers earn so I searched up the info and came up with the following information. The salaries of cops in South Africa vary. Factors that determine their salary include rank, experience, and their specific roles within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Average Salaries by Rank
-
Constable:
- Salary Range: A constable earns between R119,000 – R208,000
- Average Salary: R172,095
- Constables are the lowest rank officers and are often the first people to respond to incidents.
-
Police Officer:
- Salary Range: Their salary is more at around R175,000 – R312,000
- Average Salary: The average salary is about R220,400
- Some of the work that Police officers engage in include patrolling and engaging with the local community.
-
Police Sergeant:
- Salary Range: R212,000 – R269,000
- Average Salary: R238,423
- The main work of sergeants is to supervise constables and make sure that they adhere to operational protocols.
-
Police Captain:
- Salary Range: R210,000 – R521,000
- Average Salary: R356,290
- A police captain holds a senior position and he or she plays a very important role in overseeing police stations or divisions, also managing both administrative and strategic operations.
-
Deputy Director, Civil Service:
- Salary Range: R546,000 – R1,000,000
- Average Salary: R851,095
- This position involves significant leadership and administrative responsibilities within the SAPS.
I noted that while the salaries of South African police are lower (in absolute terms) compared to those in developed nations, we can safely say that they are relatively high when you consider the salary of the average South African, where many people are earning significantly less than police officers.
In other matters, I saw a link to an article that says the public perception of police in South Africa is generally characterized by low trust. Most surveys conducted show a trust level less than 50% with a serious decline to 27% in 2021, linked to police performance during social unrest.
Their are a number of factors that are making people lose their trust in the police force chief being corruption, and high crime rates. Victims of crime often report lower trust levels, and fears about crime further exacerbate negative views of police effectiveness.
At the end of the day, cops play a huge role in our life. I’ve seen in America (especially during elections) people calling for police officers to be defunded yet when in danger they are the first people who are called in to help. Im not of the idea of defunding police officers.
Cops play a critical role in maintaining public safety and order, which is important for a functioning society.
It is their presence that cause people to fear committing crimes. They also give us emergency assistance and at the same time ensuring the enforcement of laws that protect our rights. Despite challenges, the need for a police force in South Africa remains clear, as they are integral in safeguarding freedoms, preserving life and property, and promoting a sense of security within communities
