👴 SASSA Older Persons Grant 2026
Complete guide to the SASSA Older Persons Grant (Old Age Pension) — who qualifies, how much it pays, and how to apply in 2026.
What Is the Older Persons Grant?
The SASSA Older Persons Grant — commonly known as the old age pension — is a monthly social grant paid to South African citizens and permanent residents who are 60 years of age or older and who meet the financial means test. It is one of the most important social safety nets in South Africa, providing financial support to millions of elderly people and often supporting entire households.
The grant is administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and is funded by the national government. It is not a pension based on previous employment — you do not need to have worked or contributed to a pension fund to receive it. It is a social grant based purely on age and financial need.
In 2026, the grant pays R2,185 per month for people aged 60 to 74, and R2,205 per month for those aged 75 and older. These amounts took effect on 1 April 2026 following the February 2026 National Budget announcement.
Who Qualifies for the Older Persons Grant?
To qualify for the SASSA Older Persons Grant, you must meet all of the following requirements:

- Not be receiving care or services in a state institution (such as a government-funded old age home)
- Not be receiving any other social grant from SASSA (except the Grant-in-Aid)

|---|---|---|
| Single applicant | R89,064 | R7,422 per month |
| Married couple (combined) | R178,128 | R14,844 per month |
Income includes wages, pensions, interest income, rental income, and maintenance payments. If you are unsure whether your income qualifies, ask a SASSA official — they will assess your situation.
Asset Threshold for 2026
| Applicant Status | Maximum Assets |

FAQ — Older Persons Grant
Yes, you may still qualify if your pension income is below the threshold (R89,064 per year for a single person). SASSA will assess your total income including your pension. If you earn more than the threshold, your grant may be reduced or you may not qualify. Visit a SASSA office for an assessment.
Both spouses can apply independently. However, your combined household income and assets will be assessed together for the means test. The combined income threshold for married couples is R178,128 per year. If you both qualify, you each receive the full grant amount.
Yes. SASSA periodically reviews grants to confirm you still qualify. They may send you a letter or call you to resubmit documents. Always respond to these reviews on time to avoid your grant being suspended. Call 0800 60 10 11 if you receive a review notice and are unsure what to do.
No. The Older Persons Grant is only paid to people who are resident in South Africa. If you leave South Africa permanently, your grant will be suspended. If you travel temporarily, your grant continues, but you must update SASSA if you are away for an extended period.
♻️ SASSA Disability Grant 2026
Full guide to the SASSA Disability Grant — eligibility, the medical assessment process, documents required, and how to apply.
What Is the SASSA Disability Grant?
The SASSA Disability Grant provides monthly financial support to South Africans between the ages of 18 and 59 who have a physical or mental disability that prevents them from supporting themselves financially. The disability must be confirmed by a registered medical professional and assessed by a SASSA-approved medical officer.
This grant is intended for people whose disability substantially limits their ability to work and earn a living. It is means-tested, meaning your income and assets must fall below a specified threshold to qualify. In 2026, the grant pays R2,185 per month, effective from 1 April 2026.
The Disability Grant is available as either a temporary grant (awarded for a specific period, typically 6 to 12 months, after which it must be reviewed) or a permanent grant (for permanent disabilities, reviewed less frequently). The type of grant depends on your medical assessment.
Eligibility Requirements
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying refugee
- Aged 18 to 59 years (if you are 60 or older, apply for the Older Persons Grant)
- Have a physical or mental disability confirmed by a medical professional
- The disability must prevent you from supporting yourself financially
- Pass the means test — income must be below R89,064 per year (single) or R178,128 per year (married combined)
- Not be a patient in a state institution receiving free full-time care
- Not be receiving any other SASSA social grant (except Grant-in-Aid)
The Medical Assessment — What to Expect
Before you can apply at a SASSA office, you must obtain a completed medical assessment report (Form DG/B) from a registered medical practitioner. This is the most important step in the disability grant application process.
- Visit your doctor (or a state hospital doctor if you cannot afford private care) and ask them to complete a Form DG/B — the SASSA Disability Grant Medical Report. Your doctor must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- The doctor will examine you and assess your disability. They will complete the form describing the nature, extent, and impact of your disability on your ability to work and care for yourself.
- Take the completed Form DG/B to your SASSA office. SASSA has its own medical officer who will review your assessment and may conduct a further examination.
- SASSA's medical officer will classify your disability as either temporary (grant awarded for a fixed period) or permanent (grant awarded on an ongoing basis with less frequent reviews).
Documents Required to Apply
- 🕳 South African ID document — original and photocopy
- 📋 Completed Form DG/B — medical assessment report from a registered doctor
- 🏦 Proof of income — bank statement or sworn affidavit if you have no income
- 🏠 Proof of residence — utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit
- 💰 Bank account details — stamped bank statement or account confirmation (or SASSA will open a free Postbank account for you)
- 📋 Proof of marital status — marriage certificate if applicable
How to Apply — Step by Step
- Collect Form DG/B from your nearest SASSA office or download from www.sassa.gov.za.
- Take the form to a registered medical practitioner for completion. Bring all medical records that document your disability.
- Gather all your supporting documents (ID, proof of income, proof of residence, bank details).
- Visit your nearest SASSA office and submit your completed application. Arrive early.
- SASSA's medical officer will assess your application — you may be asked to attend a medical examination at the SASSA office.
- Receive your decision within 90 days. SASSA will inform you whether your grant is approved and whether it is temporary or permanent.
FAQ — Disability Grant
Yes. SASSA issues temporary disability grants for conditions that are expected to improve. A temporary grant is typically awarded for 6 to 12 months. Before it expires, SASSA will review your medical condition. If your condition has not improved sufficiently, the grant may be extended. If it has improved, it may be stopped.
Before your grant expires, SASSA will notify you to attend a medical review. You will need a new Form DG/B from your doctor showing your current condition. Submit this to SASSA before your grant expires to avoid a gap in payment. Call 0800 60 10 11 if you are unsure of your review date.
If you earn income while receiving the disability grant, you are required to disclose this to SASSA. If your income exceeds the means test threshold (R89,064 per year), your grant will be reduced or cancelled. Part-time or very low income work may still be within the threshold — your SASSA official will calculate this for your specific situation.
SASSA must make a decision within 90 days of your completed application. The process may take longer due to the medical assessment process. If you have not received a decision after 90 days, call 0800 60 10 11 with your reference number.
👶 SASSA Child Support Grant 2026
Everything you need to know about the SASSA Child Support Grant — who can apply, how much it pays, and the step-by-step application guide.
What Is the Child Support Grant?
The SASSA Child Support Grant is a monthly payment made to the primary caregiver of a child to help cover the costs of raising that child. It is one of the most widely accessed social grants in South Africa, supporting millions of children across the country.
The grant is paid to the person who actually looks after the child — not necessarily the biological parent. This could be a grandparent, aunt or uncle, older sibling, or any other adult who is the primary caregiver. The grant pays R530 per child per month in 2026, and a caregiver can receive the grant for multiple children.
The Child Support Grant can be received until the child turns 18 years old, provided the caregiver continues to meet the eligibility requirements. The grant is designed to help with food, clothing, school fees, and other basic needs for the child.
Eligibility — Who Can Apply?
The Caregiver Must:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying refugee
- Be the primary caregiver of the child — the person primarily responsible for the child's daily care and wellbeing
- Pass the means test — income must be below the threshold
- Not be receiving payment for caring for the child from any government institution
The Child Must:
- Be under 18 years of age
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying refugee
- Not be cared for in a state institution
- Not already be the subject of a foster care order (a separate Foster Child Grant applies)
Income Threshold for the Caregiver (2026)
| Caregiver Status | Maximum Annual Income |
|---|---|
| Single caregiver | R57,000 per year (approx. R4,750/month) |
| Married caregiver (combined with spouse) | R114,000 per year (approx. R9,500/month) |
These are approximate 2026 thresholds. Verify exact amounts at sassa.gov.za or with a SASSA official.

How to Apply — Step by Step
- Gather all required documents — your ID, the child's birth certificate, proof of income, proof of residence, and bank details.

Payment Dates — Child Support Grant 2026
The Child Support Grant is paid around the 5th of each month. In 2026, the exact dates are:
5 Jan • 5 Feb • 5 Mar • 3 Apr • 6 May* • 5 Jun • 3 Jul • 5 Aug • 4 Sep • 5 Oct • 5 Nov • 4 Dec
* May 2026 adjusted due to public holidays.
FAQ — Child Support Grant
Yes. Any person who is the primary caregiver of the child can apply for the Child Support Grant — including grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, or family friends. You must be able to demonstrate that you are the person primarily responsible for the child's daily care and wellbeing.
Yes. You can receive the Child Support Grant for multiple children, provided each child meets the eligibility requirements. The grant is paid per child — so if you are the primary caregiver for three qualifying children, you receive R530 × 3 = R1,590 per month. Each child must have a separate application.
The Child Support Grant automatically stops when the child turns 18 years old. SASSA will notify you before this happens. If you have other children who still qualify, those grants will continue. There is no need to apply to stop the grant — SASSA will automatically stop payment for the child who turns 18.
You must report the change to SASSA immediately. If you are no longer the primary caregiver, the new caregiver must apply for the grant in their name. Continuing to receive the grant when you are no longer the primary caregiver is considered fraud. Call 0800 60 10 11 to report a change.
🚪 SASSA SRD R370 Grant 2026
Complete guide to the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant — how to apply online, eligibility, status checking, and payment details.
What Is the SRD R370 Grant?
The SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant — commonly known as the R370 grant — is a monthly payment for unemployed South Africans between the ages of 18 and 59 who have no source of income. It was introduced in May 2020 as an emergency measure during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been extended and continued to provide vital support to millions of South Africans.
Unlike other SASSA grants, the SRD grant is a short-term relief measure rather than a permanent benefit. Eligibility is assessed every single month — SASSA automatically checks whether you still qualify by verifying your income status against government databases including SARS, the Department of Home Affairs, the UIF database, and others.
In 2026, the grant amount is R370 per month. The SRD grant does not have a fixed payment date. Once approved for a given month, SASSA processes your payment within 5 to 10 working days and notifies you by SMS.

- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and click "Appeal a SASSA SRD decision".
- Enter your ID number and cellphone number.
- Select the month you are appealing and state your reason for the appeal.
- Click Submit. SASSA must respond within 60 days.
FAQ — SRD R370 Grant
No. Once you apply and are approved, SASSA automatically checks your eligibility each month. You do not need to reapply. SASSA verifies your status against government databases each month. If you are still eligible, payment is made. If not, you are declined for that month. You may appeal a monthly decline.
SASSA checks your eligibility every month. You may be declined if SASSA detects any income (even a small amount), UIF payment, or if there is a data mismatch. Common causes include small cash jobs, one-off payments, or government database updates. You can appeal the decline at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Yes. Having a bank account does not disqualify you. SASSA checks your bank account activity to verify you have no income. If your account shows regular income deposits, you may be declined. An empty or low-activity bank account will not disqualify you.
Asylum seekers and holders of special permits (Zimbabwe Exemption Permit, Lesotho Exemption Permit, etc.) may qualify for the SRD grant. You must have a valid asylum seeker permit or special permit number to apply. Undocumented foreign nationals do not qualify.

| Saturday | Closed | Most offices closed on Saturdays. |
| Sunday | Closed | All offices closed. |

Tips for Visiting a SASSA Office
Arrive Early
SASSA offices open at 07:30 and queues can become very long by mid-morning. Arriving before 08:00 gives you the best chance of being served on the same day, especially for new applications.
Bring Originals AND Photocopies
Bring the original of every document plus at least one clear photocopy. SASSA keeps the photocopies and returns your originals. Not having photocopies can delay your application.
Bring Food, Water, and Something to Sit On
Queues at SASSA offices can be several hours long. Bring water, a snack, and a chair or something comfortable to sit on while you wait. This is especially important for elderly applicants.
Know What You Need Before You Go
Different grants require different documents. Review the document checklists on this website or call 0800 60 10 11 before your visit to confirm exactly what you need to bring. Arriving without the right documents means you will have to return another day.
Keep Your Reference Number Safe
When you apply or submit documents, you will be given a receipt with a reference number. Keep this receipt carefully — you will need the reference number if you call or visit again to follow up on your application.
Beware of Fraudsters Outside SASSA Offices
People sometimes stand outside SASSA offices and offer to help you with your application for a fee. This is illegal and unnecessary. SASSA officials inside will help you for free. Never pay anyone outside the office to assist you.

FAQ — SASSA Offices
Yes. Any SASSA local office can process applications for all grant types. However, it is generally preferable to apply at the SASSA office in the district where you live, as your application may be processed faster and follow-up is easier.
Yes. SASSA operates mobile service points that travel to remote and rural communities on a scheduled basis. Call 0800 60 10 11 or speak to your community development worker (CDW) to find out when a mobile SASSA service will be in your area.
Generally, no appointment is needed for most SASSA services. You queue on a first-come, first-served basis. However, some offices operate on an appointment-based system for certain services. Call 0800 60 10 11 to check the procedure at your nearest office.

Who We Are
SassaInfo is an independent information website dedicated to providing clear, accurate, and up-to-date information about the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants and services. We are not affiliated with SASSA, the South African government, or any government department.
We are a team of South Africans who believe that every person who is entitled to a social grant should be able to access the information they need to apply, check their status, and understand their rights — without confusion, without barriers, and without cost.
Our website, sassainfo.co.za, is available free of charge to all South Africans. We earn revenue through advertising to cover the costs of maintaining and updating the website. We are committed to keeping the information on this site free and accessible to everyone.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: to make SASSA information easy to understand and easy to find. South Africa has one of the largest social grant programmes in the world, supporting over 18 million people every month. Yet many South Africans struggle to find clear, reliable information about:
- Which grants they qualify for and how much they pay
- When their payment will arrive each month
- How to check whether their application has been approved
- What documents to bring when they visit a SASSA office
- How to appeal a declined application
- How to protect themselves from SASSA-related fraud and scams
SassaInfo was built to answer these questions clearly and simply, in plain language that everyone can understand — regardless of their level of education or internet experience.
What We Cover
SassaInfo provides comprehensive information about all SASSA grants and services, including:
- Payment dates — the exact date every month that each grant type is paid, including adjustments for public holidays
- Grant amounts — the current monthly payment for every SASSA grant, updated after each National Budget
- Status checks — how to check whether your application is approved, pending, or declined, and what each status means
- How to apply — step-by-step guides for applying for each grant type, including which documents to bring
- Individual grant guides — dedicated pages for the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, and SRD R370 Grant
- SASSA office information — how to find your nearest office, opening hours, and tips for visiting
- Scam warnings — how to identify and avoid SASSA-related scams and fraud
Our Commitment to Accuracy
We take the accuracy of the information on SassaInfo very seriously. We regularly update our content to reflect the latest information from SASSA and the South African government, including new payment dates, updated grant amounts following the annual National Budget, and changes to application processes.
However, it is important to understand that SassaInfo is an independent information resource. We source our information from SASSA's official website, government announcements, and published legislation, but we cannot guarantee that every piece of information is always fully up to date or accurate. SASSA may change its policies, processes, and amounts at any time.
We therefore strongly encourage all users to verify critical information — especially payment dates and grant amounts — directly with SASSA at www.sassa.gov.za or by calling 0800 60 10 11 (free).
